2013 Frenchville

Having never flown further north in Maine than Patten, and it being a perfect flying day on August 17th, I decided to take in the annual air show at Frenchville. I got an early start, and took my usual course to Patten, passing just west of Brownville Junction and Millinocket.

Patten was deserted, but I got in a welcome pit stop.

Up in northern Aroostook terrain gets relatively flat.

After a little over two hours of flying, I arrived at Frenchville with plenty of time to spare. The air show got underway in the afternoon with a five-girl sky diving team, aerobatic acts and demonstrations by Forest Service and Border Patrol helicopters. There were also a lot antics by a Shelby Mustang, burning rubber and racing up the runway with a sheriff deputy in pursuit.

Everything at the airport closed up tight by 4pm. I figured a cold night was in store, so I headed back south. I stopped at Millinocket to fill one of my wing tanks, and decided to camp there for the night.

The next morning, Sunday, I was up at 5am, packed up my stuff and was airborne at six. Realizing that Old Home Days were still going at Phillips, I headed there directly for breakfast. It was a magic carpet ride, skimming low over the trees with fog in the valleys.

At Phillips I enjoyed good fellowship and a breakfast that couldn’t be beat. I was back home shortly after noon. Life is good!
